Cryptocurrency trading has captured the attention of millions worldwide. While it offers unprecedented opportunities for financial gains, it also carries significant risks. Many novice traders and holders often find themselves in precarious positions, either due to impulsive trading decisions or a lack of understanding about market dynamics. In this blog post, we’re going to share our personal crypto trading strategy, honed over years of experience, which has proven effective for us. We’ll delve into when we buy, when we sell, and how we choose the cryptocurrencies we trade.

Bitcoin: The Cornerstone 🌟

The backbone of our strategy revolves around Bitcoin (BTC). Why, you ask? BTC’s price significantly influences the entire cryptocurrency market. At any given time, BTC is either going up, going down, or maintaining some stability, as much as a cryptocurrency can be stable. Understanding BTC’s behavior is key to navigating the crypto market.

  • When BTC Goes Up: Gradual increases in BTC’s price often lead to similar movements in larger altcoins like Ethereum and Cardano. People consider BTC a safe investment, so they often move altcoin profits into BTC during these times.
  • When BTC Skyrockets: When BTC experiences rapid surges, it tends to leave altcoins behind. Traders flock to BTC for safety, leading to aggressive altcoin sell-offs.
  • When BTC Falls Gradually: A gradual decline in BTC’s price typically drags down larger altcoins with it, though some smaller ones may hold their ground.
  • When BTC Crashes Hard: During a severe BTC crash, everything in the market takes a hit as traders rush into BTC as a safe haven.

To gauge these movements, we use an indicator called “Bitcoin dominance.” This metric shows what percentage of the total crypto market cap is composed of BTC. When Bitcoin dominance rises, money flows from altcoins into BTC, and when it falls, money moves from BTC into altcoins.

Confirmation: Total Market Cap 📊

Assessing Bitcoin dominance is just the beginning. We also look at the total cryptocurrency market cap for confirmation. If Bitcoin dominance is falling, but the total market cap is also decreasing, we typically stay cautious as it suggests an impending dip. On the other hand, if Bitcoin dominance drops while the total market cap rises, it signals the start of an altcoin season, which can be quite profitable.

Timing the Cycle 🔄

Once we’ve determined where we are in the altcoin-Bitcoin cycle, we estimate how long that stage might last. Technical analysis comes into play here, but we stick to longer time frames (monthly and weekly) to avoid noise in the price charts.

One pattern we’ve been observing is what we call the “topless letter P”. This occurs when prices surge, pull back, and then surge again to the level of the initial pump. This pattern often foreshadows future price action. For example, if the topless P pattern forms for BTC on the monthly chart, a realistic price target might be between $90,000 and $95,000 in the coming months.

Moving Averages and Indicators 📈

Moving averages are essential tools in our strategy, particularly the 200-day moving average (MA) and the 50-day MA. The 200-day MA is a strong support level, while the 50-day MA’s relationship with it can signal a “death cross” (bearish) or a “golden cross” (bullish).

We also keep an eye on the 128-day MA, using it as a critical support zone, especially during BTC price collapses. It’s a valuable indicator to help us cut losses if the market heads south.

Managing BTC and ETH 🌐

For Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH), we apply a longer-term trading approach based on the patterns we observe on monthly, weekly, and daily charts. Once we identify a bullish pattern, we set realistic price targets and take profits incrementally as prices approach those targets. Our take profit points are typically determined by visible resistance zones on the weekly and daily charts.

Taking Profits and Protecting Assets 💰

The percentage of profits we take depends on the market conditions at the time. If exceptionally bullish news triggers a rapid BTC surge, we may adjust our profit-taking strategy and be on the lookout for a potential blow-off top.

We often convert profits into stablecoins like USDC or even invest in Pax Gold (PAXG), a gold-backed token. Pax Gold tends to pump during crypto market crashes, making it an excellent hedge against volatility.

Altcoin Trading: A Different Game 🚀

When it comes to trading other cryptocurrencies in our portfolio, we adjust it every week or so. However, a significant portion of our portfolio is in BTC and ETH due to their maturity in the crypto market.

If we’re not in an altcoin season, we apply a similar profit-taking strategy as with BTC and ETH. But during a full-fledged altcoin season, everything changes.

Altcoin Season: Adapt and Thrive 🌠

In a booming altcoin season, with prices surging across the board, the standard strategy may not apply. We consider several factors before taking profits:

  • Percentage Gains: The higher the percentage gains we’ve made on a particular altcoin, the more profits we’ll take.
  • Market Conditions: If the market is experiencing a frenzy of bullish news, we might adjust our profit-taking strategy to capture maximum gains.

Discovering New Opportunities 🧐

While our portfolio mainly consists of established cryptocurrencies, we’re always on the lookout for promising newcomers. Research is key. We delve into the project’s fundamentals and market cap before making any investments.

Market Cap Matters 📈

The market cap of a cryptocurrency is a critical factor in our decision-making process. It determines the potential for price appreciation, not the token’s sticker price. Low-cap altcoins may offer substantial returns, but they also carry higher risks.

The Golden Rule: Research 📚

In conclusion, our crypto trading strategy is grounded in thorough research, technical analysis, and a keen understanding of market dynamics. BTC remains the cornerstone of our strategy, guiding our moves in the ever-changing world of cryptocurrencies.

Remember, trading cryptocurrencies carries risks, and it’s essential to stay informed, cautious, and adaptive. As the crypto market evolves, so should your strategy. And always remember, the crypto journey is not about getting rich quick; it’s about making informed decisions and navigating the market with confidence.
